How the calculation works

bags = area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ coverage per bag, rounded up

The manufacturer gives a coverage range for each trowel size because the real figure depends on the tile back, the substrate and how much mortar ends up in the ridges. This calculator divides by the low end of the range, so the number it tells you to buy should not leave you short. If you back-butter large tiles, plan for coverage at or below the low end.

Worked example

A 180 sq ft floor with a 1/4" x 3/8" notched trowel trowel and 10% extra: 180 × 1.1 = 198 sq ft. At the low end of the coverage range (60 sq ft per bag) that is 198 ÷ 60 = 3.3 bags, so buy 4 (at the high end, 70 sq ft per bag, 3 would be enough). That is 100 lb of powder.

What 254 Platinum Plus is for

254 Platinum Plus is the lightweight version of LATICRETE's flagship one-step thin-set. It is a polymer-fortified mortar that you mix with water only, sold in a 25 lb (11.3 kg) bag that LATICRETE says covers the same area as a 50 lb bag of traditional mortar. The formula contains no sand, and LATICRETE certifies that it stays below the OSHA action level for respirable crystalline silica. The figures on this page come from the North American data sheet DS-65329, revision 1026, linked from LATICRETE's own product page.

The data sheet calls it a functional equivalent of regular 254 Platinum. It exceeds ANSI A118.4, A118.11 and A118.15, and it is rated for ceramic, porcelain and glass tile, stone, quarry tile, pavers and brick, inside, outside and under water. LATICRETE singles it out as the best fit in its range for gauged porcelain tile and gauged porcelain panels and slabs, because those thin, large pieces need mortar that wets the back well and stays workable while you position them.

How it differs from regular 254 Platinum

The coverage chart is identical, row for row, except that the Plus numbers are per 25 lb bag and the regular numbers are per 50 lb bag. So for any given floor you buy the same number of bags, each one half the weight to carry up stairs or across a job site. Three other differences show up in the data sheets:

Price per bag is usually higher for the Plus, so compare the cost per square foot, not per pound.

What it bonds to

DS-65329 lists concrete and concrete masonry, concrete block, cement mortar beds, cement terrazzo, cement backer board, gypsum wallboard, plastic laminate, existing ceramic tile and stone, non-water-soluble cut-back adhesive residue, and LATICRETE's STRATA_MAT uncoupling mat. Exterior glue plywood is allowed for interior floors only, and vinyl or other resilient tile only when properly prepared. The data sheet gives a minimum plywood floor build of two layers of 5/8 inch exterior glue plywood over joists at 16 inches on center.

Do not use it directly over particle board, luan, Masonite or hardwood floors. It is not a waterproofing membrane; where one is required, install a membrane first. For white and light-colored marble, use the white version. For green marble, resin-backed tile and stone, and other moisture-sensitive marbles and agglomerates, LATICRETE points you to LATAPOXY 300 epoxy adhesive instead.

Choosing a trowel

The chart gives 80 to 95 sq ft per bag with a 1/4 x 1/4 inch notch, 60 to 70 sq ft with a 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch, and 35 to 40 sq ft with a 1/2 x 1/2 inch notch. The smallest notch suits mosaics and small wall tile, the 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch is the usual starting point for 12 inch floor tile and is the calculator's default, and the 1/2 inch notch is for larger tile and uneven backs. A fourth row, 105 to 115 sq ft with a 1/4 x 3/16 inch notch, applies only when you are bonding STRATA_MAT or HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane to the floor, not when setting tile.

The data sheet asks you to back-butter any tile larger than 8 x 8 inches (200 x 200 mm). That extra mortar is not in the chart, so raise the waste allowance in the calculator if most of your tile is large. Lift a tile now and then to check that the back is fully covered.

How the bag count is worked out

The calculator adds your waste allowance to the area, divides by the low end of the coverage range for your trowel, and rounds up to whole bags. A 150 sq ft bathroom floor with 10% extra is 165 sq ft. With a 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch that is 165 ÷ 60 = 2.75, so you buy 3 bags, 75 lb in total. With a 1/2 x 1/2 inch notch it is 165 ÷ 35 = 4.71, or 5 bags. If you are also laying STRATA_MAT first, figure the mat bonding layer separately using the membrane row.

Mixing and working time

Put clean water in the pail first: about 4.6 to 4.8 US quarts (4.4 to 4.5 L) per 25 lb bag, or up to 5 quarts (4.7 L) for gauged porcelain panels and slabs. For a partial batch, use 2.9 parts powder to 1 part water. Mix to a smooth, trowelable paste, let it slake 5 to 10 minutes, then remix without adding water or powder. Stir now and then to keep it fluffy and never temper it with more water.

Key a thin coat into the surface with the flat side of the trowel, then comb more on with the notched side. Spread only what you can cover in 15 to 20 minutes, even though the open time is longer, and press tile into wet, sticky mortar. If the mortar has skinned over, scrape it off and spread fresh.

Curing and conditions

Surfaces should be between 40°F and 90°F (4–32°C), sound and clean, and concrete should be flat to within 1/4 inch in 10 feet. Dry, dusty slabs can be dampened first, and new concrete needs no minimum cure time before tiling. Grout after at least 24 hours at 70°F (21°C); the data sheet lists 24 hours to heavy traffic. For pools and fountains, wait 14 days after the final grouting before filling.

FAQ

How much does a 25 lb bag of 254 Platinum Plus cover?

LATICRETE's DS-65329 gives 80 to 95 sq ft per 25 lb bag with a 1/4 x 1/4 inch notched trowel, 60 to 70 sq ft with a 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch, and 35 to 40 sq ft with a 1/2 x 1/2 inch notch. When you are only setting STRATA_MAT or HYDRO BAN Sheet Membrane with a 1/4 x 3/16 inch notch, one bag covers 105 to 115 sq ft. The calculator uses the low end of each range.

Does a 25 lb bag really cover as much as a 50 lb bag?

Yes, according to LATICRETE. The Plus version is a lightweight, sand-free formula, and its coverage figures per 25 lb bag are the same as those for regular 254 Platinum per 50 lb bag. So you buy the same number of bags, each at half the weight.

How much water do I mix with a bag of 254 Platinum Plus?

About 4.6 to 4.8 US quarts (4.4 to 4.5 L) of clean water per 25 lb bag, or up to 5 quarts (4.7 L) for gauged porcelain tile panels and slabs. For a partial bag, use 2.9 parts powder to 1 part water. Let it slake 5 to 10 minutes, remix, and do not add more water later.

What is the difference between 254 Platinum and 254 Platinum Plus?

LATICRETE calls the Plus a functional equivalent of 254 Platinum. The Plus comes in a 25 lb bag instead of 50 lb, contains no sand, and has a 60 minute open time instead of 40. Its ISO 13007-1 class is C2ES1P1, which drops the T (reduced slip) letter that regular 254 Platinum carries.

Can 254 Platinum Plus be used in pools and outdoors?

Yes. The data sheet lists interior, exterior and submerged applications. LATICRETE asks you to wait 14 days after the final grouting before filling a water feature with water at 70°F (21°C).
