How the calculation works

bags = area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ coverage per bag, rounded up

The manufacturer gives a coverage range for each trowel size because the real figure depends on the tile back, the substrate and how much mortar ends up in the ridges. This calculator divides by the low end of the range, so the number it tells you to buy should not leave you short. If you back-butter large tiles, plan for coverage at or below the low end.

Worked example

A 220 sq ft floor with a 1/4" x 3/8" notched trowel trowel and 10% extra: 220 × 1.1 = 242 sq ft. At the low end of the coverage range (60 sq ft per bag) that is 242 ÷ 60 = 4.03 bags, so buy 5 (at the high end, 70 sq ft per bag, 4 would be enough). That is 250 lb of powder.

What 254 Platinum is for

254 Platinum is LATICRETE's top one-step, polymer-fortified thin-set mortar. You mix it with plain water, and LATICRETE treats it as an approved substitute for its older two-part system of 211 Powder plus 4237 Latex Additive. It exceeds ANSI A118.4, A118.11 and A118.15, the highest of the three ANSI ratings for modified cement mortars, and is classed C2TES1P1 under ISO 13007-1. The figures on this page come from the North American data sheet DS-677, revision 0621, which LATICRETE serves from its own site.

The data sheet positions it for porcelain, thin porcelain and glass tile, gauged porcelain tile panels and slabs, stone, quarry tile, pavers and brick, inside or outside. It is one of the few bags on a store shelf that the manufacturer calls excellent for exterior and underwater work, which is why tile setters often reach for it on pools, fountains, balconies and steam showers.

What it bonds to, and what it does not

DS-677 lists cement mortar beds, concrete and masonry, concrete block, cement plaster, cement terrazzo, non-water-soluble cut-back adhesive residue, existing ceramic tile and stone, and cement backer board (check with the board maker for exterior use). It also works over LATICRETE's STRATA_MAT uncoupling mat and HYDRO BAN Board. Some substrates are interior only: exterior glue plywood, properly prepared vinyl or other resilient tile, and plastic laminate. Gypsum wallboard and gypsum plaster are allowed only indoors in areas that stay dry.

Do not use it directly over particle board, luan, Masonite or hardwood floors. The mortar is not a waterproofing membrane either; where one is needed, install a membrane first. For green marble, resin-backed tile and stone, and other moisture-sensitive marbles and agglomerates, LATICRETE points you to its LATAPOXY 300 epoxy adhesive instead. For white and light marble, use the white version of 254 Platinum so the grey cement does not show through.

Choosing a trowel

The coverage chart has three rows: 80 to 95 sq ft per 50 lb bag with a 1/4 x 1/4 inch notch, 60 to 70 sq ft with a 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch, and 35 to 40 sq ft with a 1/2 x 1/2 inch notch. The smallest notch suits mosaics, wall tile and small floor tile. The 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch, which this calculator selects by default, is the usual starting point for 12 inch floor tile. The 1/2 inch notch is for larger tile and uneven backs where you need more mortar to reach full contact.

Let the tile decide. Lift a tile now and then and look at the back: you want full, even transfer, and the data sheet asks you to back-butter any tile larger than 8 x 8 inches (200 x 200 mm) for firm support. Back-buttering uses extra mortar that the chart does not include, so raise the waste allowance in the calculator if you plan to do it on most tiles.

How the bag count is worked out

The calculator adds your waste allowance to the area, divides by the low end of the coverage range for your trowel, and rounds up to whole bags. For example, a 200 sq ft floor with 10% extra is 220 sq ft. With a 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch that is 220 ÷ 60 = 3.67, so you buy 4 bags. The same floor with a 1/2 x 1/2 inch notch needs 220 ÷ 35 = 6.29, or 7 bags, nearly twice as much mortar. Picking the notch before you shop matters more than any other input.

If you find a different coverage number online, check the revision code in the corner of the sheet. Older copies of DS-677 on distributor and specification sites show 40 to 45 sq ft for the 1/2 inch notch, and one shows 50 to 60 sq ft for the 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch. This page uses DS-677-0621, the version on LATICRETE's own CDN when we checked.

Mixing and working time

Put clean water in the pail first: about 5.5 US quarts (5.2 L) per 50 lb bag, or up to 6 quarts (5.7 L) when setting large thin porcelain tile. For a partial batch, use 3.6 parts powder to 1 part water by volume. Mix by hand or with a slow-speed mixer to a smooth, trowelable paste, let it slake 5 to 10 minutes, then remix without adding water or powder. Stir now and then to keep it fluffy, but never temper it with more water.

Key a thin coat into the surface with the flat side of the trowel, then comb more on with the notched side. Spread only what you can cover in 15 to 20 minutes, set the tile into wet, sticky mortar and beat it in with a block and rubber mallet. The data sheet gives 40 minutes of open time and a 2 hour pot life. If spread mortar has skinned over and no longer feels tacky, scrape it off and put down fresh.

Curing and conditions

Surfaces should be between 40°F and 90°F (4–32°C), clean and sound, and concrete should be flat to within 1/4 inch in 10 feet. Dry, dusty slabs can be dampened first, and the data sheet does not require a minimum cure time for new concrete. Grout after at least 24 hours at 70°F (21°C); the data sheet also lists 24 hours to heavy traffic at that temperature. Cold weather slows curing, so protect the work from traffic until it has fully set. For pools and fountains, wait 14 days after the final grouting before filling.

FAQ

How much does a 50 lb bag of 254 Platinum cover?

LATICRETE's DS-677 gives 80 to 95 sq ft per 50 lb bag with a 1/4 x 1/4 inch notched trowel, 60 to 70 sq ft with a 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch, and 35 to 40 sq ft with a 1/2 x 1/2 inch notch. The calculator uses the low end of each range so you are less likely to run short.

How much water do I mix with a bag of 254 Platinum?

About 5.5 US quarts (5.2 L) of clean water per 50 lb bag, or up to 6 quarts (5.7 L) when setting large thin porcelain tile. For a partial bag, use 3.6 parts powder to 1 part water. Let it slake 5 to 10 minutes, remix, and do not add more water later.

Do I need to add latex to 254 Platinum?

No. It is a one-step mortar that you mix with water only. LATICRETE describes it as an approved substitute for its 211 Powder mixed with 4237 Latex Additive.

Can 254 Platinum be used in pools and outdoors?

Yes. The data sheet calls it excellent for exterior and underwater applications. LATICRETE asks you to wait 14 days after the final grouting before filling a water feature with water at 70°F (21°C).

Why do older data sheets show different coverage?

LATICRETE has revised DS-677 several times. Older copies on distributor sites list 40 to 45 sq ft with a 1/2 inch notch, while the June 2021 revision (DS-677-0621) that this page uses lists 35 to 40 sq ft. We use the revision LATICRETE serves from its own site.
