How the calculation works

bags = area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ coverage per bag, rounded up

The manufacturer gives a coverage range for each trowel size because the real figure depends on the tile back, the substrate and how much mortar ends up in the ridges. This calculator divides by the low end of the range, so the number it tells you to buy should not leave you short. If you back-butter large tiles, plan for coverage at or below the low end.

Worked example

A 180 sq ft floor with a 1/4" x 3/8" x 1/4" square notch trowel and 10% extra: 180 × 1.1 = 198 sq ft. At the low end of the coverage range (60 sq ft per bag) that is 198 ÷ 60 = 3.3 bags, so buy 4 (at the high end, 67 sq ft per bag, 3 would be enough). That is 200 lb of powder.

What VersaBond Professional is for

VersaBond Professional is CUSTOM Building Products' all-purpose, polymer-modified thin-set mortar, the gray or white bag many people pick up for an ordinary bathroom floor, kitchen backsplash or entry tile job. It exceeds ANSI A118.4 and A118.11 straight out of the bag, so you mix it with plain water and no latex additive. The data sheet, TDS-119, was published on December 12, 2023, and is the version CUSTOM links from the product page today.

CUSTOM describes it as being for "most standard installations" and highlights that it sets quickly even in cold weather. It is rated for ceramic, mosaic, quarry and cement-body tile, impervious porcelain, glass tile, brick and thin brick, cement-based precast terrazzo and natural stone. Note the limits below, though: it is a thin-bed mortar, not a large and heavy tile mortar.

What it bonds to, and what it does not

TDS-119 lists concrete, mortar beds, masonry and Portland cement plaster; WonderBoard Lite cement backerboard; liquid waterproofing membranes such as RedGard and Custom 9240; crack prevention sheets such as Crack Buster Pro; uncoupling mats such as RedGard Uncoupling Mat; and surfaces primed with CUSTOM's MBP Multi-Surface Bonding Primer. It also allows exterior-grade plywood in interior residential and light commercial dry areas, gypsum wallboard in interior dry areas, and, once scarified, existing ceramic tile, fully bonded sheet vinyl and plastic laminate.

Do not bond it directly to hardwood, luan plywood, particle board, parquet, cushion or sponge-backed vinyl, metal, fiberglass, plastic or OSB. CUSTOM also says it is not recommended for pools and water features, for resin-backed stone, or for moisture-sensitive natural stone and agglomerate tile; for those it sends you to its epoxy products or its crack prevention mortars. For clear or translucent glass it recommends its Glass Tile Premium mortar, and for glass tile larger than 6 x 6 inches it asks you to call technical services first.

Choosing a trowel

The coverage chart has only two rows, both square-notch trowels: 85 to 95 sq ft per 50 lb bag at 1/4 x 1/4 inch, and 60 to 67 sq ft at 1/4 x 3/8 inch. The smaller notch is typical for wall tile and small floor tile; the 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch, which this calculator selects by default, is the common choice for 12 inch floor tile. Your tile, not the chart, decides the notch: the goal is at least 80% mortar contact in dry areas and at least 95% in showers, wet areas and exteriors, with every tile edge supported.

The data sheet caps the mortar layer at 1/4 inch (6 mm) after the tile is beaten in, with a minimum of 3/32 inch. That is the ANSI limit for mortars without an "H" rating, and it is the main reason VersaBond is not the right bag for big porcelain planks or slabs. If your tile is large enough that you are reaching for a 1/2 inch notch, look at a large and heavy tile mortar instead; our VersaBond-LHT calculator covers CUSTOM's version, which allows a bed up to 3/4 inch.

How the bag count is worked out

The calculator takes your area, adds the waste allowance you enter, and divides by the low end of the coverage range for your trowel. It then rounds up to whole bags. For example, a 150 sq ft floor with 10% extra is 165 sq ft. At 60 sq ft per bag with a 1/4 x 3/8 inch notch, that is 2.75, so you buy 3 bags. With a 1/4 x 1/4 inch notch the same floor needs 165 ÷ 85 = 1.94, or 2 bags.

CUSTOM only publishes coverage for the 50 lb bag. A 25 lb bag holds half the powder, so it covers about half the area; if you plan to buy 25 lb bags, double the count the calculator shows. If you back-butter tile, which the data sheet advises for some tile and which is common for natural stone and tile with ribbed backs, add a further allowance: CUSTOM's chart does not include the extra mortar on the tile itself.

Mixing and working time

Use 6 US quarts (5.68 L) of clean water per 50 lb bag. Mix by hand or with a 1/2 inch drill at a low 150 to 200 RPM until the mortar is smooth and paste-like, let it slake for 5 to 10 minutes, then stir again. Stir occasionally as you work but never add more water; that weakens the mortar and is one of the most common reasons tile comes loose later. Properly mixed mortar holds a troweled ridge without slumping.

Spread a skim coat with the flat side of the trowel, then comb more mortar in one direction with the notched side held at 45 degrees. Press each tile in with a back-and-forth motion across the ridges, then beat it in. Pull up a tile now and then to check the coverage on its back. Mortar in the bucket stays workable for about 4 hours, but once the spread mortar skins over and is no longer sticky, recomb it or scrape it off and replace it.

Curing and conditions

As a guide, CUSTOM allows 24 hours before grouting and light foot traffic, and 7 to 10 days before heavy or vehicular traffic. Keep the space between 50°F and 100°F (10–38°C) for 72 hours so the mortar bonds properly; cold, damp sites slow curing, so wait longer before grouting there. Concrete must be cured for 28 days, accept water and be free of efflorescence and hydrostatic pressure.

FAQ

How much does a 50 lb bag of VersaBond cover?

CUSTOM's TDS-119 gives 85 to 95 sq ft per 50 lb bag with a 1/4 x 1/4 inch square-notch trowel and 60 to 67 sq ft with a 1/4 x 3/8 inch square notch. The calculator uses the low end of each range so you are less likely to run short.

How far does a 25 lb bag go?

CUSTOM only publishes coverage for the 50 lb bag. Because the 25 lb bag holds half the powder, expect roughly half the area: about 42 to 47 sq ft at 1/4 x 1/4 inch and 30 to 33 sq ft at 1/4 x 3/8 inch. To use the calculator for 25 lb bags, double the number of bags it shows.

Can I use VersaBond for large format tile?

Not as a thick bed. VersaBond has no ANSI "H" rating, so the data sheet limits it to 1/4 inch (6 mm) of mortar under the tile after beat-in. Tiles that need a 1/2 inch notch or bigger usually need a large and heavy tile mortar such as CUSTOM's VersaBond-LHT, which allows up to 3/4 inch.

How much water do I mix into a bag?

6 US quarts (5.68 L) of clean water per 50 lb bag. Mix by hand or with a drill at 150 to 200 RPM, let it slake 5 to 10 minutes, then stir again. You can stir now and then while you work, but do not add more water.

Can VersaBond be used in a pool or fountain?

No. TDS-119 says it is not recommended for interior or exterior pools and water features. For submerged tile CUSTOM points to its MegaLite, MegaFlex or ProLite mortars instead.
